### Lesson Plan: Simple Physical Properties
#### Subject: Science
#### Grade: Year 1
#### Duration: 45 minutes
#### Topic: Simple Physical Properties
---
### Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify and classify basic physical properties of objects such as shape, size, color, and texture.
2. Use descriptive words to talk about the properties of various objects.
3. Participate in hands-on activities to enhance understanding.
### Materials Needed:
- Various objects (different shapes, sizes, colors, textures such as a ball, sponge, feather, plastic toy, etc.)
- Chart paper/whiteboard and markers
- Magnifying glasses (optional)
- Worksheets for classifying objects (simple table format)
- Crayons/colored pencils
### Lesson Procedure:
#### Introduction (10 minutes)
1. **Greeting and Attendance**: Welcome students and take attendance.
2. **Engage**: Begin with a short discussion on what they know about objects around them.
- Ask: "What are some things you see every day?"
- Have students name a few and write them on the board.
3. Explain that today they will explore how objects can be different and learn some words to describe these differences.
#### Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
1. **Explain**: Introduce the concept of physical properties.
- Use simple language: "Physical properties are words that describe how an object looks or feels."
- Highlight four major properties: shape (round, square), size (big, small), color (red, blue), and texture (smooth, rough).
2. **Show Examples**: Using the objects provided, demonstrate the properties.
- Hold up a ball: "This is round and smooth."
- Hold up a sponge: "This is square and rough."
- Have students repeat descriptive words after you.
#### Guided Practice (10 minutes)
1. **Sorting Activity**:
- Divide students into small groups.
- Give each group a set of assorted objects.
- Have them sort the objects based on one chosen property (e.g., sort by color first, then by shape).
2. **Discuss Findings**:
- Ask each group to share how they sorted their objects.
- Write their findings on the chart paper/whiteboard.
#### Independent Practice (10 minutes)
1. **Worksheet Activity**:
- Hand out worksheets with a table that has columns for shape, size, color, and texture.
- Ask students to draw or write the name of one object in each category.
- Encourage them to use different colored pencils/crayons to make their work more engaging.
#### Closure (5 minutes)
1. **Review**:
- Ask students to share one thing they learned about physical properties today.
- Reinforce learning by showing a few objects again and having students describe them out loud.
2. **Summarize**:
- “Remember, objects have different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. These are called physical properties!”
3. **Homework (Optional)**: Ask students to find one object at home, draw it, and write its properties to share in the next class.
---
### Assessment:
- **Observation**: Monitor student participation during the sorting and group discussion.
- **Worksheets**: Review completed worksheets to check for understanding.
- **Verbal Responses**: Listen to students' descriptions during the review session.
### Differentiation:
- **For Advanced Learners**: Provide more complex objects or encourage using additional properties such as weight (light, heavy).
- **For Learners Needing Support**: Pair with a buddy for group work or provide objects with very distinct properties for easier classification.
### Reflection:
- After the lesson, note which students struggled with particular concepts.
- Consider adjusting future lessons to include more tactile/hands-on activities or simpler explanations where needed.
